I love that song about if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with. Now, I know it’s really about cheating on your loved ones, and I truly disagree with that, but I don’t ever think of the meaning of the lyrics when I hear it. I like the upbeat tempo and the tune. As they used to say on “American Bandstand,” it has a good beat and you can dance to it! But if I want to think about the lyrics in a positive way, I can relate this very easily to loving myself. Even when the ME that I am is not the ME that I hope to become.

In fact, I doubt that I can become the ME I hope to become if I don’t love the ME that I am right now. I have to love myself now because that’s the only way I can take care of myself and try to make changes in my life that allow me to get to the ME that I want to become. If I don’t love the ME that I am, I won’t care if I make postive changes and do what’s good for myself. I think that’s how we disintegrate into people that we don’t want to be. We stop loving ourselves. We stop looking out for ourselves. We stop caring. The land of Not Caring is a bleak place to live. Have you ever heard someone say, “How could I have let myself go like this?” Listen to what they’re really saying: “How could I have LET MYSELF GO like this?” You would never let go of the hand of a small child when crossing a busy street together. You would never let go of a loved one who needed your encouraging, loving arms around them. So, how can we let go of ourselves? We can’t if we love ourselves and care about ourselves.

Is friendship for a lifetime? It is often hard to say because there is no right answer to this question; sometimes we expect that friendships are for a lifetime and in case of real friendship I am sure that friendship can exist as long you live.

Friendship is one of the most important things in our lives and we all have periods with problems or we need advice and having a good friend to turn to is a very nice thing to have. Even if you are married or in a relationship there are always items which you prefer to talk first with your friends; not that your husband or wife doesn’t want to listen to these problems but a friend often has another view on certain issues than the person you live with will.

A lifetime friendship can start when you are a little child but many times these friendships are only for a certain period. You get friends when you are going to school; to play with and probably you have many common interests. When you become older it is sometimes hard to keep these friendships alive. At this stage in your life you will both probably be in relationships or have gotten married. Keeping in touch is not always easy because very often you live far from each other and your free time is limited.

Most people are going to work outside and in the evening they spent most of the time with their husband or wife. If they have children it is often difficult to make time free for your childhood best friends but there are certainly friendships which can exist for a lifetime. Especially if you are in a sports club or another kind of activity which you share is perfectly possible that the friendship will be so close that you can give your friendship a lifetime agreement.

When you become an adult you will expand your circle and meet new friends. It mostly happens when you don’t expect it. This can be near the place you live, at work, during a travel or even online. On this stage of age you have other interests and also other kind of problems where you need a friend for. The key is making a friendship last is to make certain agreements to keep in touch with each other.

I don’t have strong friendship bounds from the time when I was a child or even from the time I was below 25 years old and it was not necessary to keep them alive. It happens from time to time that I meet some of my friends from that time but nothing happens to give it a chance to keep them alive.

I really believe that lifetime friendships exist and I was almost sure I found one eleven years ago. It happened during a travel to Andalusia (Spain). I frequently travel with a group and I made a few friends there. After this travel we set dates with five friends and came together 4 or 5 times years during the year to visit a museum or another cultural activity. We always finished these days with a nice dinner and made some other travels together. Our tour leader was one of the friends I made there but a few years ago she died. After this our group meetings disappeared but I have one friend from that time whom I now consider my friend for a lifetime.

I made one travel to Carinthia with this friend, also with an organized travel in group, and since then our friendship became closer. We called each other several times and a few years ago we started to visit different cities in our hometown. It happened in the beginning every two or three months but now we get together almost once a month. We also call each other several times a month because we don’t live in the same city and it is not possible to visit each other every week. Even if it was possible I doubt that visiting each other too often will have a good effect for a long time friendship.

The use of Internet makes it possible to find friends online. There are many dating sites where you can find friends online but most of them are searching for a relationship and if you are searching for a friend you will become disappointed. I found the last two years some good online friends in writing sites and some of them are now friends for more than a year. Keeping in touch is really not difficult; e-mail and messenger services make it possible to keep these friendships alive. These friendships are still young and it is difficult to say now if these friendships are for a lifetime but I really believe that some of them are for a lifetime.

Friendships are important in life and if you find a real friend I am quite sure that real friendships exist for a lifetime. It happens very frequently that friendships have a longer lifetime than a romantic relationship or a marriage and you can also have lifetime friendships with someone of the opposite sex. True friendship is really beautiful and offers you benefits for a lifetime.

 Pet Care – Dogs can feel jealous just as people do

 Studies have shown that dogs behavior is very much a part of  their emotional state and that pet dogs do indeed have emotions of love, and jealousy. If you have more than one dog, just try to pet one, and the other will come running over to make sure not to be left out. Prior to these recent studies, scientists thought only primates and humans could be jealous because jealousy is a complex behavioral emotion.  It takes a level of intelligence to have complex emotions, and it was thought dogs did not have this capability. Recently a two different animal researchers proved that dogs display jealous reactions and behaviors in many situations. The study involved 1,000 pet dogs and their owners. 80% of the pet owners answered repeatedly that their dogs showed jealous behavior, As an example, dogs would often nuzzle in between the couple to make sure the dog got affection. It was an intentional act on the part of the dog to get their owners away from the new partner in the beginning of the relationship, creating a love triangle between the couple and the dog.  

In the world of emotions, there are primary and secondary emotions, and it was thought that pet dogs only had primary emotions like, love, anxiousness, and anger, in addition to surprise. In order to process the feelings of secondary emotions, a higher level of intelligence is needed.  These studies now say that dogs have a bigger range of emotions than was once thought. In addition, these behaviors were exhibited in dogs, cats, sheep, cows, pigs, horses, and hamsters. Dogs seem to exhibit the  greatest intensity of jealous behaviors.  This may be due to a dog’s fear of wanting to maintain their place in “the pack”. Dogs would rather not share their “family” with anyone else.  In addition to a new lover entering the scene, this jealous dog behavior can be seen when a new pet is brought into the house, and even a new baby. To a dog, the stability, and routine has changed, and so has their security.  They don’t know why the new pet or person is there, and they don’t know what will happen to them now that there is a change.  Out of acting defensively, they may exhibit aggressive behavior, show signs of anxiety or depression, or revert to other “bad behavior”.  Should this happen, it may be wise to consult with a dog trainer who will be able to work with the dog, the owner, and the new situation.  Dog trainers are very familiar with a variety of pet behaviors and will correct the situation before it gets worse.  It may also be advisable to consult with a dog trainer before the changes occur, so that you know what to expect and how to handle the jealous dog’s behavior in a constructive way.

It is important to understand that the dog’s behavior is a result of emotions that have been affected by these changes. It might seem like it is easy to overlook the emotional health and mental stability of your pet dog. But dogs watch us with a laser focus and notice how they are treated. In one study, groups of paired dogs were asked to give their paw. One dog got rewarded, the other dog did not. After a time, the dog that was not rewarded, gave up on giving their paw.  The dog exhibited resentful behavior, and noticed they were being treated “unfairly” (if dogs could define the word unfairly). Human beings have somewhat the same feelings and act with similar behavior reactions.  Perhaps dogs have learned these traits from living with humans for thousands of years.

Some behaviors that dogs exhibit when they are stressed include, licking and scratching themselves if they were not given the attention they desired.  The pet dogs reacted by trying to get affection from their owners when they felt attention was denied them.  These behaviors can get worse over time, but dog trainers know how to effectively deal with such behaviors.

How do you know if your dog is jealous?   Very often if you notice behaviors such as depression, lethargy, aggressive behaviors, snapping, snarling, growling, moodiness, biting, and other anxiety induced behaviors, your dog may be exhibiting signs of jealous behavior.  Should you notice any changes in your dog’s behavior, or anticipate these changes you can help your dog tremendously by keeping the same routines, maintain the usual habits you were doing before the new arrival of the person or pet.  Be sure to give extra affection and attention to your dog to let you know you still love him. Make a big deal when the dog is behaving the way you want them to behave.  Be a strong leader, use discipline, and rewards whenever necessary.  Show your pet dog compassion and empathy so that they will feel your love.  It is important to understand the situation from your dog’s point of view if you want them to behave. There are things you can’t explain to them in words, but showing them in actions will be enough for them to understand.  They need your love and attention more than ever when things have changed suddenly for them.  Your affection towards your dog will be rewarded with lasting loyal behavior from your canine companion.

Although dog do have feelings of jealousy, it is believed that their emotions are different than human emotions.  Dogs lives are all about the current moment, and so their feelings are probably more rudimentary.  Emotions are a hard thing to measure on any living creature. It really isn’t important how complex the feeling is, what is important is to acknowledge that your dog may have jealous feelings and the dog’s behavior will probably change. It is important to help your dog, either by understanding their feelings and compensating for their fears of displacement in the house, and perhaps by bringing in a dog trainer who can help with the situation and bring about positive behaviors from this change. Dogs and humans have a very close relationship.  We read each other’s cues and respond to each other’s wants. There are evolutionary explanations as to how dogs can accurately read our cues, and the more we look at these studies and understand dog behavior, the more we can understand human behavior.

Dogs originated from the grey wolf thousands of years ago, ad throughout history dogs have been my man’s side.  They have been loyal and affectionate animals who have co-existed with us since the stone age. Your pet dog depends on you for food, shelter, affection, attention, pet health care, emotional well being.  When they express their feelings through negative behavior, it is important to gain an understanding of what to do, and learn how to correct this behavior, so that your dog stays happy.  Some people believe dogs can’t be jealous, they may be behaving badly, from feeling insecure. Anthromorphism is attributing human characteristics to an animal.  People certainly do this with their pet dogs, but it has been a long time tradition, since they have shown to be faithful companions who understand humans in ways better than any other species.

Tillman the skateboarding bulldog from the iphone commercial. All clips are from January 2007. Tillman was a little over a year old at the time. A little history of this first video. I Filmed the video using a just purchased Panasonic Lumix TZ1. I was bicycling through Venice Beach California when I came upon the skateboarding dog. Originally the first video had the soundtrack “Giving In” by linkin Park. Once the video appeared in iphone commercials I removed the video from youtube because of the attention it was getting and I had no rights to use the song. As time approached for Apple’s release of the iphone with youtube, youtube contacted me and requested I reinstate the video without the soundtrack. Youtube wanted users to be able to view the skateboarding dog in the store and after purchasing their iphone. Unfortunately youtube gave me only a few hours to re-edited video before the iphone release. The original background sound on most of the clips was ruined by hysterical laughter from a woman watching Tillman so I cut and pasted sound in from other parts of the video to cover the laughter. That’s why some claim they hear the word eskimo over and over-lol. When the original video with the Linkin Park soundtrack was selected it had around 15000 views.

So if you are considering a dog for personal or family protection here are the things you need.

confident puppy with correct temperament, drives and conformation
sturdy puppy crate
responsible owner
copious amounts of time and energy

tugs, balls, rags and other fun puppy toys
leash and collar
puppy training sleeve (you can make your own, see my ehow on how to make a puppy protection training sleeve)
qualified trainer (later on in training)
Obedience training instructor if you do not understand positive obedience training.

Your puppy should drag a leash when he is out of his crate.

Of course it does you no good if he has the leash in his mouth… LOL Whenever your puppy is out of the crate he needs to be under someone’s direct supervision. This is to prevent housebreaking accidents, and to prevent him from getting into trouble.

When he is out of the crate and not in the backyard playing unsupervised, he needs to be dragging a leash. This way you always have control of the puppy. Do not play catch me if you can with any puppy, as this only teaches him that he CAN evade you.

If he is dragging a leash you can step on the leash when he refuses to come when called and then simply reel him in like a fish on a line. Try to step on the leash somewhere other than the handle, this way he never learns just how long that leash is. If he can figure out how long the leash is then he knows how much room he has before you can catch him.

Use only positive training methods with puppies!

Corrections come later once the puppy is older and understands the training.
Positive puppy or dog training relies heavily on a clicker or verbal marker to tell your puppy that he has done something correctly Basic obedience is first trained using positive methods.

This way your puppy learns that training is fun. Sit and down are the first things you need to train, this way they become a default behavior. You can teach him these using marker training or by placing him into position while telling him the name of the command. This training also should begin the day you bring your puppy home, since it uses food and praise as a reward this training will build trust and teach your puppy his place in your family pack. Get the entire family involved in training your puppy, they will eventually depend on him and he needs to understand that they CAN tell him what to do.

A sock with a knot tied in it makes a good first tug.

The knot helps the puppy realize that only socks with knots in them are for him to play with. Tug O War is a game you will also teach your puppy starting the first week after you bring him home. Tug O War is a confidence building game that has rules that the puppy will need to learn. If you do not know how to play this game correctly feel free to read my article on how to play tug games with rules.

You will play this game with your puppy with his leash on. This way when you let him win the tug he can not get away from you to go chew on the tug in secret. He wins the tug and you still have control of him to reel him back in for the game to continue.

You wriggle the tug around like it is alive, to get his interest in chasing and grabbing the tug. The first few times you will let him “catch” the tug after a couple of failed attempts (his), you have to be fast to keep him from catching the tug too soon. When he is really interested in “catching” the tug you will let him catch it in his mouth, then give it a wiggle and let him have it. He will attempt to run away with his prize but, you have the leash so he can’t get far. Before he gets a chance to put the tug on the ground you will reel him back into you while excitedly saying “good boy, good boy” and then you will grab the end of the tug and give it a little shake again, when he pulls back on the tug you will again let go and continue as before.

Once he starts to catch on to the game you will let him pull on tug while wiggling it to make it seem “alive”, let him get a couple of good tugs on it and then let him win the tug again.

Tug-O-War is a game with rules!

Your puppy needs to learn that Tug O War is a game with rules. This will make training much easier later on down the road when he is ready for the “helper”(assistant who takes the bite). After a few days of playing with the tug toy like this, it is time to begin to teach him that this game really has rules. When you are ready to let him get a bite on the tug you will start giving him the bite command. In German this word sounds like Pa-kin with the ahh sound, but you can use any word you choose as long as it is not something you use in everyday speech. You will also teach him that he must release the bite or tug when he is told as well, again in German this word sounds like Owu-t or a rather harsh sounding but drawn out “OUT”. You will only have your puppy release the toy once in the beginning. This way he doesn’t anticipate the “Out” command and release the toy when he is not asked. You want him to hold and carry the sleeve (bite arm) later on in training, so doing the “out” too often will make it so that he will not want to hold and carry the sleeve. When you tell him to “out”, you will step on the toy while pulling up on his collar or leash, this makes it uncomfortable for him to continue to hold and he will release his grip. Once he has released his grip on the tug you will want to kick it away before lowering the hand with the leash or he may get the tug before you are ready.

Ball on a string

You will want to make a ball on a string toy to play with your puppy. Get any rubber ball with 2 holes and tie a cotton cord to it.

If you have a feed and tack store nearby you can buy a lunging whip like you use to train horses and attach your ball on a string to the end of it, otherwise you can tie it to a long stick like you would if you were pretending to have a fishing pole.

You can then bounce the ball and pull it along the ground using the stick so that you can get some distance between you and the ball.
Entice your puppy to chase the ball, but try to make it difficult for him to catch it. The harder it is for him to catch, (without making things so hard he gives up), the more interested he will be in catching it. Make sure to let him catch it before he looses interest and gives up.

You can also run with the ball on a string letting the ball drag the ground as long as you let the pup catch it from time to time. Again make sure he is wearing his leash and you have the end of it, so that you can let him win the ball from time to time and still have control over your puppy.
Again, as before, do not ask him to “out” the ball more than once or twice at the most.

Always stop the game before your puppy gets tired. You want to stop while he still wants to continue the game, this way it “builds drive” and keeps him interested in the game.

Puppies should never be allowed to bite children or their clothing!

Puppies must not be allowed to bite children or their clothing. It is up to you to protect your children from those sharp puppy teeth until the puppy learns better.

Do not take your puppy for walks off your property until after he has received all his puppy shots. In the mean time you can begin teaching him not to bite or mouth family members. When he is excited a puppy especially a puppy from working blood lines will get mouthy and bite hands and fingers.

NEVER discipline your puppy for doing this, instead give him something else to chew on like a squeaky toy or some other toy to play with. If he does bite you tell him OUCH, then stand up and pretend he no longer exists. Do not let small children play with your puppy unless you are there to step in and protect them from sharp puppy teeth. Explain that the puppy needs to learn the rules and they can not play with the puppy unless you are there until he learns not to bite them. If the puppy bites the children he should be told no and put into his dog crate until he gets the chance to calm down. In the beginning it may seem like he spends an awful lot of time in the crate, but he will catch on.

It is tempting to take your new puppy everywhere with you, but he MUST NOT leave the property untill he has had all of his puppy shots!

PARVO can KILL your puppy!

Do not take your puppy off the property to visit friends or family until after he has finished his puppy shots and been cleared by your Veterinarian to do so. Once your puppy has received all his puppy shots and your veterinarian says that it is ok to take him off your property then you can begin to take him out for short walks.

Let him meet people but warn them that he is very mouthy and may bite while wanting to play and that if he bites they should say “ouch!” in a shrill voice and not hit or yell at the puppy for biting. For a puppy destined to be a personal protection dog the rules have to be different!

Even the best bred puppies show fear from time to time

A fearful puppy will have his ears back and his tail low or tucked between his legs. When you notice something frightens your puppy encourage him to investigate the scary object Once he has been cleared by your Veterinarian to go off the property you should begin to get him used to all sorts of strange sights and sounds. If something appears scary to him, ask him in a silly tone of voice what he is barking at and walk up to the scary thing with him to let him investigate it. Never feed into the fear by touching him or picking him up if he appears nervous or frightened in any way. This only shows him that he had something to fear!

Your puppy depends on you

Your puppy depends on you to protect him and keep him safe, so that later on he can protect you! If you have chosen your puppy wisely you will find that, as your puppy gets older there will be less things that will frightens him and he will begin to walk with an air of confidence. He should be introduced to more people and situations that he is unfamiliar with. You want him to believe that you and he own the ground he walks on.
You are HIS protector at this point, he must learn to look to you for guidance and protection from other dogs and dangerous situations. Never fall into the idea that your puppy must tough and that he should be able to protect himself or that he needs to be “tough around other dogs” It is your responsibility to keep him safe so that he later takes direction FROM you, you are his leader and it is the leaders responsibility to protect other pack members, the pack leader says who fights and when! Do not let your puppy down, he depends on you!

Keep training sessions short so that your puppy doesn’t loose interest
Only ask your puppy to give up his toy once or twice a day so that he doesn’t anticipate having to give it up.
keep things positive so that he is having fun.
Do NOT take your puppy out of his yard until all his puppy shots have finished and your Veterinarian says it is ok to do so.
keep training treats tiny, just a taste, if they have to stop and chew the treat it is too big.
Never hit your puppy for any reason
Never allow your puppy to be bullied by another dog, it is your responsibility to protect him. The last think you want is for him to be scared or injured by another dog! This causes dog agression later!
